The Unstill Life is an interactive web-art project proposed by Dylan Gauthier, Rory Solomon and Paula Zaslavsky for the consideration of the Lower East Side Tenement Museum's 2007 Digital Artist in Residence Project.
Dylan Gauthier is an artist, activist and curator. He is co-founder of the Doome Fishe Theatre Companie and a collaborator on the Empty Vessel Project. He is also Associate Director and Curator for Gigantic ArtSpace, a new media art gallery located at the cusp of Chinatown and TriBeCa in Lower Manhattan. He designed and maintains the websites for the Empty Vessel Project and Gigantic ArtSpace, in addition to his personal portfolio site: www.s-p-a-r-r-o-w.org. Dylan will assist in the design and implementation of the web interface, research and compile the historical and contemporary background data for the project, visit classes and do outreach to other Lower East Siders for project participation.
Rory Solomon is a software developer, technology consultant and digital artist. He has built database-intensive web applications for the Parsons Institute for Information Mapping, Columbia University Medical Center, and Oracle Corporation. He was a primary programmer of Ouija 2000 – a collaboratively-controlled Internet robot that was featured in the Whitney Biennial and the Berkeley Art Museum. Rory currently teaches programming at New School University, and is the founder of the Lifted Wing Project, an itinerant gallery for emerging New York artists. Rory will implement the database-level logic and will lead the coding for the web and visualization components.
Paula Zaslavsky is an educator, organizer and usability designer. She is a co-founder of The Black Label Bicycle Club New York Chapter, the Amateurs (a performance art group) and the Empty Vessel Project. She designed graphics for http://www.paintballbynumbers.com, and co-created the project described there. She was also the editor of the Empty Vessel Project's newsletter. Paula will facilitate the group's interaction with ESOL classes, provide a framework for gathering data from ESOL students and other participants in the project, silkscreen posters, visit classes and contribute to the user interface design of the website.
